Carrageenan

Consistency:

  • Required  consistency of the "size" varies with the brand of paint being used and the desired effects.
  • Consistency of Syrup
  • At least the consistency of buttermilk
  • Pudding like is too thick and interfere with the paint spreading.
  • Add more Carrageenan to thicken the size if needed or water to thin it if necessary.

Note about distilled water.

  • Try tap or filtered water.
  • "Hard" water interferes with the process and water softener will need to be added.
 

Carrageenan Size Recipe:

1 T carrageenan / 4 cups of warm distilled water (1/4 cup/ gallon)
  • Add Carrageenan slowly to water as you stir.
  • Blend in blender on medium for 1-2 minutes.
  • Repeat as necessary.
  • Make sure powder is fully dissolved.
  • Cover with plastic.
  • Let  mixture to "mature" for 8 to 12 hours before use.
  • Refrigerating for 24 hours will obtain the best viscosity and to allow trapped air bubbles to rise to the surface.

Used at room temperature

 

Starch

Liquid starch

  • is used undiluted.

Powdered laundry starch

  • mixed to a heavy solution followingrecipe included on the box.
