Marbling Tray Set-up

  • The size is poured into a shallow tray. Fill pan with size solution to a level that can be pierced with the stylus or teeth of the comb, usually 1/2" to 1" deep or as much as 2" - 3"

  • Skim size with newspaper strip first to reduce the surface tension and eliminate any dust or air bubbles.

  • Just before adding the paints, skim off any film that has formed on the surface of the "size" by dragging a strip of newspaper from one end to the other.

  • Size should always be still. Splashing the size and abrupt movements of the pans should be discouraged.

  • Size is spoiled if it becomes watery and/or develops a fishy smell
