Treat Paper with Mordant

  • The mordant prepares the surface of paper or fabric for quick adhesion of the paint.  A mordant is a chemical that combines with the paint and fixes it permanently on the paper.
  • Wear protective gloves
  • Mark one side of the paper or fabric to be marbled then turn over and sponge the cooled alum solution on the unmarked side.
  • Any areas that are not treated with alum will retain no paint.
  • The paper should be kept damp but not wet. The slightly damp paper is easier to lay on the tray than dry paper.
  • Fabric can be dry before printing.
  • Construction paper usually does not need to be treated; all fabric does.
