1 liter water

Add soda ash to a small amount of hot water until the powder dissolves. Add room temperature water to dissolved soda ash solution to make a volume of 1 liter.

Working temperature of the developing solution should be between 65-70 degrees F. Add developing solution to photo developing tray.

Develop ImagOn Plate

Use of actual object for block out in the exposure unit, and work directly on ImagOn's  protective mylar.

Materials:

  • Plate laminated with ImagOn

Process:

  • Remove top mylar from the ImagOn coated plate (if it has not already been removed)
  • brush your open palm backwards against the edge of the ImagOn coated plate to lift the edge of the mylar. Once edge is lifted, remove it from the plate.
  • Place plate in ImagOn developer
  • Gently rub plate with a very soft sponge
  • See feel and hear the texture of the ImagOn changing.
  • Development time = Apx 2 minutes
Health Warning
Rubber gloves RECOMMENDED for the development procedure. Repeated use of developing solution can dry out the skin and cause a dermatitis reaction on the hands.
Health Warning
Eye protection advised.
The developer is an alkaline solution. Do not splash the developing solution into eyes.

Health Warning
Dry without heat

  • All of the ink for the intaglio print is carried within the depth of the film layer.
  • For lighter areas of ink, you will not see the copper plate below.
  • Knowing precisely when the image is developed is a matter of experience based on visual inspection and the tactile feel of the image during this developing stage. It is the unexposed areas of the ImagOn that washes away in the developing solution. After the unexposed ImagOn is washed away valleys and grooves are left in the ImagOn emulsion that are characteristic of the intaglio plate.
  • In the end it is how the plate looks and feels that is the determining factor as to when it is fully developed. It is extremely important to be very cognoscente of this part of the procedure so that developing successes can be repeated. Invariably each printmaker will create their own developing technique that works for them.
. Rinse and Dry Plate
  • Rinse plate under room temperature running water
  • Blot or squeegee excess water off plate
  • Dry with hair dryer on air setting
