Papers for Marbling

  • Paper should be absorbent without a slick or resistant surface or the mordant and colors will not take.

  • The paper must be strong enough to be wet twice, first when the alum is applied and later when the patterned paper is rinsed to remove the excess size and colors.

  • Best paper for acrylic and watercolor marbling is Lanaquarelle

Dampening

  • Commercial papers are dampened before using

  • Unsized handmade papers should be dampened between damp blotters or try to use them dry.

  • Delicate papers such as gampi should be lifted from the tank with bamboo skewers placed along one side.  Barely put under one edge and lift slowly. It can help to place a piece of pellon on the back before lifting.

  • Texoprint Paper: Extremely durable white paper, with a slight latex content.  The latex makes it excellent for marbling since it is not harmed or weakened when it gets wet.  It dries flat.

Drying

  • Dry papers that do not contain Hercon can be a difficult problem. Papers that contain Hercon can be hung like marblers do, but unsized papers are best dried  in the same ways as when they were formed... restraint, between pellon, rolled onto silkscreen...
Final drying can be done between blotters to prevent warping.
