Fiber Test Procedure

Materials and Supplies available for check-out
  • usually for a three day time period
  • check for availability with instructor
  • Checkout sheet
Basic Project Requirements
  • Each student completes the entire fiber preparation and sheet forming process.
    • The student will gather (or locate and secure) the plant materials, cook, clean, beat, and form sheets.
      .
  • Fully Documented Experiment
    • All sheets and samples must be accompanied by documentation of the fiber and necessary process information.
      .
  • Each student shares their project with the entire class and papermaking program.
  • two samples to the college
    one sample to the instructor
one sample to each student in class
  • Note: sample includes some raw fiber and a pulled sheet of paper(s).  It is expected that at least the student's sample set, one of the sample sets to the college, and the sample set to the instructor includes a small sheet of paper of each step in the process of sheet development.  This would include the various beating coarseness, the various amounts of supplemental fibers added to form a viable sheet.
    .

  • Students who do not complete this project will not receive samples from others in the class.
  •
  • stainless steel cooking pot and cover
  • stirring paddle or wooden spoon
  • soda ash
  • hot plate
  • rubber gloves
  • goggles
Preparation of Raw Fiber
Measure fiber
Cook fiber
Rinse fiber
PRECAUTIONS:
  • Like all alkali chemicals soda ash should be added to water. Never add water to an alkali because splattering will occur.
  • Wear eye protection.
  • GOGGLES or MASK
  • WEAR RUBBER GLOVES..
  • beating sticks
  • beating board
  • Jar for testing beating
Beat Cooked  Fiber    .
  • Dry formation aid (Neri)

Prepare Formation Aid (Neri)
refer to your handout: Formation Aid (Neri)
.
  • Vat
  • Wool blanket for under vat
Vat Set-up
  • Scissors, shears or clippers.

  • Hand scissoring works well for iris, cornstalks, gladiolas
.
  • Mold and Deckle
  • Pellon
  • Felts
  • Sponges
  • Small bucket
